What to Do With Your Notary Stamp When Your Commission Expires

expired notary seal Every time you renew your commission, you receive a new notary seal. So, what do you do with your old one? Privacy should be your number one priority, as it protects both you and your clients. Even when your commission is expired, it can still be used for false notarial acts, and you can be held liable. When disposing of your old notary seal, take care to guarantee it cannot be used. Your old notary seal cannot simply be thrown away once you have received a new one. Properly disposing of your old notary seal can be done by cutting your seal into pieces before throwing it away. Make sure the impression can never be used on it. To do this, peel the plastic rubber from the base of your stamp. Be careful, it will have some of the ink still on it. To avoid smudging ink on yourself, either wipe off the base or use the edge of your scissors to peel the rubber off. Once you have removed the rubber, cut it into several pieces. Cut along the words and your commission number for added precaution. Watch our video, How to Dispose of Your Notary Stamp Seal, for an in-depth and comical look at how to dispose of your old notary seal.
